Schnitzel Holstein - The Flying Deutschman

There’s something about German food that never fails to hit the spot. Whether it’s schnitzel, bratwurst, or those enormous soft pretzels, the rich flavors always leave me wanting more. I don’t get to eat German food as often as I’d like, so I immediately jumped at the chance to try The Flying Deutschman, a food truck that’s all about authentic German dishes.

The Flying Deutschman specializes in a variety of German classics, and I was fortunate enough to catch them at von C Brewing Co. in Norristown last Friday. As I approached the truck, I noticed the workers having a great time, jamming to music while they took orders and cooked. After scanning the menu, an item called the Schnitzel Holstein sparked my interest, and that’s what I decided to order. My meal was ready in about five minutes, and I was excited to give it a try.

The Schnitzel Holstein features a schnitzel topped with a fried egg, served with home fries and red cabbage. The schnitzel itself was perfectly cooked—juicy and tender on the inside, with a golden, crispy crust on the outside. You could taste the flavors from the meat and its satisfying crunch with every bite. The fried egg on top was an interesting addition, and it couldn’t have paired better. The egg was cooked just the way I like it, with a runny yolk that spread across the schnitzel, adding some additional savory flavors.

The sides were just as impressive. The red cabbage was a standout with its sweet flavor and subtle kick. When paired with the schnitzel, it created both a sweet and savory flavor. I highly recommend grabbing a forkful of both at once. The home fries were classic German style—soft on the inside with a hint of crispness on the edges. Both of these sides were the perfect companions to the schnitzel and egg.

If you’re a fan of German food, or if you’re just curious to try something new, The Flying Deutschman is a must-visit. The workers are clearly passionate about their cooking, and it shows in the food they serve. A lot of the other customers from Friday night seemed just as satisfied as I was. If you’re interested in learning more about The Flying Deutschman, make sure to follow them on Instagram to keep up with their food and locations. I know I’ll be back for more soon.
