There’s nothing like a good gyro sandwich. The combination of protein, seasonings, and sauces creates a satisfying burst of flavors. Lately, I’ve been on a bit of a gyro kick, so when I heard that a food truck called King Gyro was going to be in town, I couldn’t wait to give it a try.
King Gyro is a halal-based food truck offering a variety of options, including rice platters, gyro sandwiches, and salads. Each option can be customized with different proteins like chicken, lamb, fish, and even some vegetarian choices. King Gyro’s primary location is in Philadelphia, but I had the chance to visit them at Ten7 Brewing Company in North Wales last week, where they were stationed for dinner. I decided to go with the Combo Gyro Sandwich, which featured a mix of chicken and lamb—my usual favorites when it comes to halal dishes. Despite being a one-man operation, the service was impressively quick. The only wait I had was for the customers ahead of me, and my order was ready in less than two minutes.
The Combo Gyro Sandwich is packed with chicken, lamb, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, all wrapped into a massive pita. For the sauces, I opted for a combination of white sauce and hot sauce—my go-to for halal food. The chicken was perfectly cooked, with a slightly crispy exterior and a juicy, tender interior that’s exactly how grilled chicken should be. But the lamb was the real star of the show. It was incredibly tender and juicy, with generous portions that were full of flavor. The hot sauce was delightfully spicy, offering a serious kick that paired perfectly with the cool, creamy white sauce. The pita was also noteworthy—not only was it fresh, but it held everything together without falling apart, which is crucial for a sandwich of this size.
King Gyro is definitely a food truck to check out if you’re craving some delicious halal food. I’ve already got my eye on a few other items from their menu, and I can’t wait to try them the next time they’re in my area. You can usually find King Gyro at 925 Levick Street in Philadelphia, but they also pop up at different breweries both in and out of the city. Make sure you follow them on Instagram to stay updated on their menu and locations.
